BOMCAS Canada Accessibility Commitment in Detail

BOMCAS Canada believes that Canadian individuals and businesses deserve equal access to professional accounting and tax services regardless of ability, age, language, or technology. This Accessibility Statement explains in detail how we have built bomcas.ca, our client portal, and our service delivery workflow to meet the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 Level AA and to comply with applicable Canadian accessibility legislation, including the Accessible Canada Act (ACA), the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act (AODA), British Columbia's Accessible British Columbia Act, Manitoba's Accessibility for Manitobans Act, Nova Scotia's Accessibility Act, and similar provincial frameworks.

Standards we follow

Our reference standard is WCAG 2.1 Level AA. WCAG is organized around four principles — Perceivable, Operable, Understandable, and Robust — and we apply each one to every page and every form on this site:

Perceivable. All meaningful images carry descriptive alternative text. Decorative images use empty alt attributes so assistive technology can skip them. Colour contrast on body text, headings, and interactive elements meets or exceeds the 4.5:1 contrast ratio required for normal text and 3:1 for large text. Content is not conveyed by colour alone — every coloured indicator is paired with text or an icon.
Operable. Every interactive element on the site (links, buttons, form fields, the mega-menu, the mobile navigation, the consultation form) can be reached and operated using only the keyboard, in a logical and predictable order. A visible focus outline appears on every focusable element. We provide a "Skip to content" link as the first focusable item on every page so screen reader and keyboard users can bypass the navigation. No content flashes more than three times per second.
Understandable. Page language is declared in the HTML, headings follow a logical H1 → H2 → H3 hierarchy, and form fields have programmatically associated labels and clear error messages. We avoid jargon where possible and explain Canadian tax acronyms (CRA, GST/HST, T1, T2, CCPC, RRSP, TFSA, CCA, TOSI, etc.) the first time they appear on a page.
Robust. The site uses semantic HTML5 elements (header, nav, main, article, section, footer), valid ARIA roles only where native HTML is insufficient, and avoids JavaScript-only navigation patterns. It is tested with current and recent versions of NVDA, JAWS, VoiceOver on iOS and macOS, TalkBack on Android, Dragon NaturallySpeaking, browser zoom up to 200%, and Windows High Contrast Mode.

The following accessibility features are built into every page of this website:

Skip-to-main-content link as the first keyboard focusable element.
Semantic landmark regions (header, nav, main, footer) so assistive technology can jump directly between site sections.
Single H1 per page, descriptive and unique to that page.
Visible keyboard focus styles on every link, button, and form control.
Form fields with explicit <label for=""> associations, required-field indication, autocomplete attributes, and inline error messages.
Alternative text on every meaningful image; empty alt on decorative imagery.
Sufficient colour contrast in body text, headings, links, buttons, and form controls.
Responsive layouts that reflow cleanly at 320 px width and at 200% browser zoom without horizontal scrolling.
No content that depends on hover-only interaction.
No autoplay media, no time-limited interactions on essential forms.

Accessible service delivery beyond the website

Accessibility does not end with the website. When you become a BOMCAS Canada client, we adapt our service delivery to your needs at no extra cost:

Documents are provided as accessible, structured PDFs and editable Word/Google Docs versions on request, with proper heading structure and tagged content for screen readers.
Engagement letters, invoices, and reports can be provided in large print, plain language summaries, or simplified one-page formats.
Video meetings (Microsoft Teams, Google Meet, Zoom) can be set up with live captioning enabled; we provide written meeting summaries on request.
Telephone calls can be supplemented with email follow-up so deaf and hard-of-hearing clients have a written record.
We support clients using Canada's Video Relay Service (VRS) and provincial accessibility services.
Where a client needs a longer call, more frequent check-ins, or a different format of document exchange, we accommodate it as a routine part of the engagement.

How we test and maintain accessibility

Accessibility is an ongoing process. We test new and modified pages using a combination of automated tools (axe DevTools, WAVE, Lighthouse, Pa11y), manual keyboard testing, and screen-reader walkthroughs. Significant template changes are reviewed against the WCAG 2.1 AA success criteria checklist before being deployed. We also welcome real-world feedback from clients and visitors — that feedback is, in our experience, the most reliable way to find and fix accessibility issues that automated tools miss.

Known limitations

We strive for full WCAG 2.1 AA conformance, but we acknowledge that older blog images uploaded before our current alt-text standard may have less descriptive alternative text, and some third-party embedded content (for example, accounting software demo videos) is not under our direct control. We are progressively remediating these items and prioritize fixes that affect navigation and forms.

Feedback and accommodation requests

If you encounter an accessibility barrier on bomcas.ca or in any of our services, we want to know. Please call 780-667-5250, email info@bomcas.ca, or use the contact form. Tell us the page or service involved, the assistive technology and browser you are using, and the nature of the barrier. We aim to acknowledge accessibility feedback within two Canadian business days and to provide a remedy or workaround within ten business days. If a fix will take longer we will commit to a timeline and keep you updated. Where the barrier prevents you from using a service, we will deliver that service through an alternative accessible channel at no additional cost.
